Just prior to 18-year-old En’s (Joshua Tan) mandatory enlistment into the Singaporean army, a series of events and disclosures threatens to alter his world view forever. The taste of his first romance, the death of his grandfather, his grandmother’s worsening Alzheimer’s disease, his schoolteacher mother’s affair with an uptight military commander, and En’s newfound awareness of his late father’s student activist past all contribute to his decision to revaluate the pieces of his life before they are erased by the tides of time. Singapore Release Date: 26th August 2010, Thursday Running Time: 95 minutes Ratings: G Genre: Drama Cast: Bobbi Chen, Elena Chia, Joshua Tan Crew: Director (Boo Junfeng), Producer (Fran Borgia, Gary Goh, Eric Khoo, Michael Werner, Boo Jun Feng, Nellecke Dreisen), Writers (Boo Junfeng), Production designer (James Page), Music (Darren Ng), Director of photography (Sharon Loh) and Editing (Natalie Soh) The Review I find that many of Singapore local production are pretty much depressing, but the recurring theme is pretty much close-to-heart, and one we all can relate to. Sandcastle hits a home-run in terms of the storytelling of a dysfunctional Asian family on the rocks. Sounds familiar? The plot very much reveals how a family dark secret past is still able to haunt us in the present. Will the Tan family self-destruct, or will they embrace changes, and their secret past. Of course those not familiar with Singapore culture, would be clueless at some of the scenes. It won’t be that much in terms of what is lost-in-translation however. Entertaining yes, if you’re into family drama that is. The Good Well acted The Bad The pace of the movie is slow A slight political feel to the movie
